Chapter Six

Tiegan

By the time the credits roll on the movie we’re watching, I’m the only one still awake. My entire body aches from my sledding wreck, so I carefully roll off of the couch and pull myself up to my feet.

I stop to cover them both up with the blanket, hovering maybe a little too long over Reid. He looks younger in his sleep, the lines around his mouth and eyes having smoothed out, his normally neat hair a little messy. His lips are parted slightly, and I touch my own, remembering how they felt pressed against his. The whole day was magical, like something out of a cheesy Christmas movie.

My ankle already feels a lot better, but I know just what I need. I hobble away from them and into Reid’s bathroom, which is the only one with two things I’m after: 1) a stocked medicine cabinet, and 2) a jacuzzi bath. I run the water in the bathtub as hot as I can stand it to soothe my aching muscles and down two pain pills with water from the tap. Then, I strip down, knot my hair on top of my head, and sink into the water with a sigh of contentment.

It’s crazy how life can change so quickly. A few days ago, I had no job and nowhere to live. Now, my life is brimming with joy and people I’m growing to love. Ainslee is my little friend, my partner in crime. And Reid…well, I get him now. Taking care of people is how he shows his love, and it feels amazing to be included in that circle. He just wants us to be safe. Secure. Happy.

And I am.

I really am.

When the water grows tepid, I feel much better. I drain the tub and get up, wrapping myself in a soft, gray robe I find hanging on the back of the door. My plan is to sneak back to my room to change into my pajamas, but when I step out into the bedroom, I stop in my tracks at the sight in front of me.

Reid is sitting on his bed waiting for me, wearing flannel pajama bottoms and a gray t-shirt that does little to hide his muscular physique. His hair sticks up a little in the back from where he was sleeping on the couch, and the stubble on his square jaw is thick and dark.

“What…what’s going on?” I stammer.

“Ainslee is in bed. And you…” He grabs the belt on the robe and tugs me to him. “You are half-naked in my room.”

“I didn’t think you would mind,” I murmur down at him, resting my hands on his shoulders.

“You’re right. I don’t. How’s your ankle?”

“Better,” I admit.

“I can’t stop thinking about that kiss,” he says. “I want more.”

The words send a chill of excitement down my spine. “It isn’t against the rules?” I ask.

“Fuck the rules,” he growls. With that, he grabs my waist and pulls me down until I’m on my back on the bed.
